So here's the dilema...
I have a job, that much is clear otherwise I couldn't afford to keep this blog filled with interesting and witty repartee, well something like that anyway...
So my current job:
For
- Good computers
- 2x nice 22" screens
- great chairs
- great coffee*
- some good people (although a few have left already)
- paid overtime
- ability to take some overtime (1/3) as extra leave up to a max of 10 extra days
- reasonably autonomous work - ie I can decide what and how to do stuff
- good pay esp. given what I'm not doing ;-)
| Against
- the boss has the social skills of a snail recently at the centre of a nuclear explosion
- there's no new work coming in (yet)
- the customer is a git
- the staff at the data centre of the customer are mainly ex-gardeners (it's government so they cant hire new people but have to use people who their old departments want to get rid of as they are too stupid to find their own arse with both hands)
- it's all becoming a bit same old same old
|
*this does
not go without saying - coffee in Germany usually sucks and/or makes one think of a camel with a urinary tract infection...
So the question is:
What do
YOU think?
I think (since you did ask) :-) you might want to have a look around to see what else is available. You might decide you have a good deal after all, or you might see something more worthwhile.
ReplyDeletePS. Presumably your boss and colleagues don't read your blog ;-)
Hrmm... This is the real reason: "it's all becoming a bit same old same old"... The IT industry has a tendancy toward jobs that become "same old" very quickly.
ReplyDeleteJust be careful you don't do the whole "grass is greener on the other side", because it is usually the same shade of brown.
In your current position, you can afford to be picky if you do decide to change jobs. You don't want to end up in a boring job with nothing interesting to do.
Some of my colleagues know that I'm thinking about this, they are also the ones who occasionally read the blog. My boss doesn't read the blog - at least not that I know of. We'll find out if that is not the case shortly I gather ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe survey needs a third button which says "depends".
ReplyDeleteIt depends on what else is out there, of course. This kind of thing is relative rather than absolute.
Yes but a depends button only inspires people to cop out in the same way I already am ;-)
ReplyDeleteMove to Singapore! Plenty of IT jobs here at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Julia & Greg & Olya. If you aren't 100% happy with you job, you should look at what else is available. You may find something that is better than your current one, or you may make a decision that current one is good enough. Both ways you'll stop questioning and agonizing about what to do. You talked about it for so long, that you should take some type of action (I guess blogging about it is progress), which will hopefully lead to some new conversation topics :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else that you should look what else is out there. Having said that I think it's often hard to change jobs whilst you currently have a stable, steady job.
