We're now nearly at 38 weeks, meaning that the bun in the oven is officially (medically) done and is now just getting nice, crispy and brown. At the last ultrasound the doc told us that the baby is now roughly 2700 grams and that was two weeks ago, so he's probably more like 3kgs now - but we get to find out at another ultrasound next week. He's normally very active in the evenings, and Jack can see his movements even from the outside. Most nights he gets hiccups, which is very cute (for those of you who don't know - it's a sign that he's learning to breathe and is totally normal).
Last week I started a series of prenatal acupuncture sessions with my midwife. She comes around to our place and pokes me with little needles in the legs. That lasts about 20 mins. The theory is that it's supposed to soften the cervix and thus shorten labour time. Obviously you'll never know if it worked or not, but I'm giving it a try anyhow. She is very good and it doesn't hurt at all. I've also been going to physio because my right hip has been hurting a lot (thanks to my crooked spine - years of foolishly wearing a 10 kg school backpack only on one shoulder) and I've been having trouble moving around. Physio seems to help though, so that's good.
Last two weeks have been annoying because Jack and I both had (yet another) cold. That brings the count of colds this spring up to two. We spent more than a week in bed getting better and now finally feeling somewhat healthier. The annoying part was that we were not really up to doing very much in preparation for the baby, so now the stress is a little more than I would've liked it to be. But we're getting there anyway.
We finally have the bag for the hospital packed and ready to go. This week I also managed to finish knitting a woollen baby blanket, and sewing a play/crawling mat. We have also been cooking food to freeze for the first weeks after birth, in order to give us more time to spend with the new member of our family and not in the kitchen. Hopefully the cradle will also be finished this week, which would mean that most stuff is done.
It's a little hard to believe that there's only days left to go. Even though the baby is active every day and his kicks are very strong, it is still a bit surreal - I feel like I'm in a dream, and then once the baby is actually out I'll wake up :)
All the best, it's very exciting :D
ReplyDeleteYou sound much more prepared than I was :-D Hope you'll avoid getting colds for the rest of this year.
ReplyDeleteyey! can't wait :)
ReplyDeleteActually I found it more surreal the first few days Maya was in the world. Whenever I woke up I would wonder if I'd dreamt having a baby or not. :-P
